Our portfolio company eAgronom becomes one of the very first certified carbon offset providers in Europe from sustainable farming, as it secures its registration under the Verified Carbon Standard by Verra. It’s a pivotal moment not only for the co-founders Robin Saluoks, Kristjan Luha, and their team, but also for regenerative agriculture and the carbon market it advances. Here’s why.
More than five years have passed since eAgronom signed its first pre-contracts with farmers who started changing the way they farmed. With the help of eAgronom’s software tool, they implemented regenerative farming practices such as crop rotation, cover cropping, reduced tillage, precise nutrient management and plant protection – all aimed at lowering GHG emissions and increasing carbon sequestration. In the long term, soil-forward farming methods are proven to increase crop yields, because carbon soil directly promotes soil health and fertility.
These early adopters among farmers helped eAgronom hone its systems, collect more feedback and data, and ultimately to earn its first Verra registration under the VM0042 methodology – one of the most rigorous frameworks globally for agricultural land management.
“Our first VM0042 credits are an important milestone in turning carbon waste into something beneficial for the planet,” explains the CEO Robin Saluoks. Supported by carbon asset developer South Pole and technological service provider Regrow, the newly certified Carbon Program already has over 300,000 hectares enrolled. In total, eAgronom now works with over 3,500 farmers in 13 countries, managing 2.5 million hectares. Its partner farms across Europe and Africa have already stored over a million tonnes of CO₂. This is equal to removing 200,000 cars from Europe’s roads for an entire year.
What does it mean for the soil carbon market?
The Verra registration and first credit issuance are a hard-earned achievement that opens a new chapter not only for eAgronom’s business model, but also for the broader soil carbon market. It shows a viable, scalable way of moving towards regenerative agriculture and putting carbon emissions – “a wasted product of our society”, as Robin puts it – back to work.
What’s more, it also demonstrates how science-based methodologies, diligent monitoring, tracking, and verification, and farmer-forward models can unlock scalable – and profitable – climate impact. For eAgronom’s business model, this milestone marks a new phase of viability, especially given recent deals such as Microsoft’s $171–$228M carbon credit purchase. Crucially, this model also generates additional revenue streams for progressive farmers transitioning beyond business-as-usual agricultural practices.
“Every business generates waste, and CO₂ is no exception. What matters is how we deal with it, and soil offers a unique solution. Plants and living systems capture CO₂ from the air and return it to the soil, improving soil, water, and ecosystems,” adds Robin Saluoks. “Soil carbon does not mean ignoring emissions, but rather taking a responsible approach to them.”
Meet the company behind all this work.
Co-founded by Robin Saluoks and Kristjan Luha in 2016, eAgronom has always put soil health at the forefront of its mission. Its farm management software tool enables farmers to adopt regenerative farming practices in a financially sustainable way.
In 2023, eAgronom joined our portfolio through our participation in their €5.5M investment round. In 2024, the company raised a further €10M in a Series A round led by Swedbank AB, with our participation marking our third follow-on investment. Today, it counts over 2.5M hectares registered across all carbon programmes and farm management software.
However, the road leading here has required both trust and tailored feedback from farmers, and years of persistence and meticulous data collection from the eAgronom team. That’s why the first VM0042 Verra credits mark not only a new chapter for the business, but also a tangible, well-deserved reward and recognition for the team, stakeholders, and farmers involved.
Big congratulations on this milestone. We’re thrilled to continue supporting you on the journey ahead.
